| Abdal, Qutb, Ghauth, Qayyum | Exalted appellations of the aulia. Their warrant of precedence is as under: |

The four Qutb form the spiritual cabinet of the Ghauth.

Qutb-e Irshad is concerned with the matters of Shariah.

Qutb-e Madar is concerned with matters pertaining to the Divine administration of the universe , like those associated with Hadhrat Khidhar in the Quran (18: 65-81).

Qutb-e Abdal is concerned partly with the matters pertaining to both the Shariah and the Divine administartion of the universe.

One of the aulia from Siddiq to Ghauth must be present in all ages, others may or may not be.

| As-hab-e-Suffah | Companions of the Bench, the celebrated sufis of the time Holy Prophet, who always stayed in the Prophet's Masjid. |
| Azan | Muslims' call to prayer. |
| Bai'at | Oath of Allegiance, the rite of initiation, the pledge of loyalty. |
| Barzakh | The abode for mankind and spirits during the period between death and The Resurrection . |
| Darud Sharif | Invocation of ALLAH's choicest favours and blessings on Prophet Muhammad-SAW by Muslims. |
| Fana-Baqa | Passing away from self (Fana) into the consciousness of survival in ALLAH (Baqa). |
Fana fi-ALLAH, |
The extinction (Fana) of human attributes through union with ALLAH, whereby a sufi attains the eternal continuance (Baqa) of spiritual life in Him. |
| Fardh, (pl) Fara'idh | Compulsory, obligatory act(s) of worship. |
| Fiqh | The Islamic jurisprudence, the religious law. |
| Hadith, (pl) Ahadith | Anything attributed to the Holy Prophet, which may be a saying or an action, his appearance, behaviour, state, or anything said or done in his august presence, to which he consented. |
| Hadith-e Qudsi | Literally: a sacred utterance. The Words of ALLAH as distinct from the Quran. For example: "In no way does My servant draw so near to Me as when performing those duties which I have imposed on him". |
| Halqah | Sufi assembly, the seance, the circle. |
| Hadhrat | Title prefixed to anmes of the Prophets, thr Companions and the aulia, symbolising reverence (for men and women alike). |
| Ihsan | Literally: sanctifying virtue. According to Hadith, "Worship ALLAH as if you seem Him, for if you don't see Him, yet He sees you." |
| Ilham | A direct Divine inspiration flashing into an enlightened heart; intuition. |
| Ilqa | The focusing of Divine lights by a Sufi Master from his spiritual stations onto a seeker, absorbed according to the latter's capacity. |
| In'ekas | Literally: reflection. In sufi terminology, it is the reflection of Divine lights, by a Sufi Master, from his bosom onto that of a seeker, absorbed according to the latter's capacity. |
| Kabah | House of ALLAH in Makkah - The inviolable shrine towards which a muslim must turn his face during Salah and undertake pilgrimage once in his lifetime - if in possession of material means. |
| Khulafah-e-Rashidin | The first four righteous Caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali-RAU |
| Karamah | A supernatural act emanating from a wali as distinct from M'ujezah (miracle), which is particular to the Prophets. |
| Kashf | The perceptive insight leading to spiritual manifestations. For details see Chapter 17. |
| Kashfi | The one blessed with kashf, or pertaining to kashf. |
| Kashf-e Qubur | The manifestation of the state of the dead in their graves. |
| Lataif | The Lataif (subtleties) are (1) Qalb - the heart, (2) Ruh - the spirit, (3) Sirri - the inner most, (4) Khaffi - the hidden depth, (5) Akhfa - the most hidden depth, and (6) Nafs - the soul. Their points of location in the human body by a subtle Divine arrangement are:(1) two fingers below the left nipple, (2) two fingers below the rght nipple, (3) two fingers above the left nipple, (4) two fingers above the right nipple, (5) in the middle of the chest, and (6) in the forehead respectively. All Lataif except Nafs are from the Realm of Command. |
| Lail at-Taris | The Night of Rest. |
| Mujjadid Alif Thani | Reviver of the second Muslim Millennium - The term refers to Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi (d. 1034 A.H. / 1624 C.E.). Also referred to as Imam Rabbani. |
| Mujtahid | Literally: man of endeavour. A Muslim jurist entitled to definite opinion. |
| Mustajab ad-Dawat | A wali whose supplications are generally accepted. |
